Highly recommend this & Ally!

My black lab Sadie always comes home shattered and so mentally tired which is great because she’s a busy gal who loves to exercise. Such an incredible service and so grateful to Ally for working with her. Sadie can be A LOT because of the excess energy and Ally has been amazing helping her burn that off and SAFELY! She comes home a different dog and so much more chill

Love love love her Friday slatmill days, they’ve been a game changer in our house

About Me

Hi, I’m Ally, and dogs have always been at the heart of everything I do. My journey began with training service dogs for people with disabilities, where I saw how the right training can transform not only a dog’s life but also the life of their owner. From there, I expanded into working with dogs with behavioural challenges, helping them overcome issues and building strong, trusting relationships between them and their families.

Two years ago, I made the best decision to move to Nelson with my own dogs, and I’ve fallen in love with the vibrant local community. As a proud Nelson local, I’m all about bringing the best in dog training and fitness to our area.

One of the tools I’ve personally used and loved is the slatmill. It’s been an incredible way to keep my own dogs fit, healthy, and mentally stimulated, and I’m thrilled to bring this resource to you. Whether your dog needs to burn off extra energy, improve their fitness, or just run at their own speed, slatmill sessions are a game changer.

We welcome dogs of all breeds, sizes, and personalities. From shy and nervous dogs to high energy powerhouses we can provide structured training, slatmill sessions, or a combination of both, my only goal is to help dogs live their best life.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

How long should a dog run on a treadmill?

Start Your Dog Slow

After a few weeks, your dog will be able to run on the treadmill from anywhere between five to 10 minutes. At that point, you can start increasing the time of each workout by one to two minutes. Build up gradually until you reach 30 minutes. Each dog is different and we provide a three stage program to keep dogs progressing.

Are slatmills safe for dogs?

In summary, when used thoughtfully and under supervision, dog slatmills and treadmills are not only safe but also beneficial for canine fitness. They provide a flexible exercise option, allowing dogs to maintain their physical health without putting undue stress on their bodies

Can my dog lose weight on a slatmill?

If your dog is overweight, slatmill exercises can be an effective way to help them shed some pounds. By providing a controlled and safe environment for exercise, a weight loss program can be offered and a treadmill can help your dog burn calories and improve their overall fitness level.

How do I know if my dog is getting enough exercise?

Here are 5 signs your dog isn’t getting enough exercise.

  • Sign 1: Destroying the House.

  • Sign 2: Withdrawn Behaviour.

  • Sign 3: Hyperactivity.

  • Sign 4: Excessive Barking or Whining.

  • Sign 5: Stiffness.

What happens if I don't exercise my dog enough?

Exercise is crucial to raising a healthy dog, both physically and mentally. Insufficient exercise leads to physical problems – weight gain, deconditioning, boredom and so on – but it also creates a host of problem behaviours!

Are the dogs forced to run?

No! The slatmill is totally mechanical. It has no motor and is powered by the dogs natural running pace. We do not force the dogs to run, they tell us how fast or slow they want to move.

How much exercise should I be giving my dog?

This comes from people trying to strike a balance between keeping their dog fulfilled and managing their own time. But instead of looking for a strict minimum, think of it this way: how much time can you realistically give? The more you engage with your dog physically and mentally, the better it is for both of you.

Exercise isn’t just about burning energy—it’s essential for your dog’s physical health and mental sharpness. Regular activity helps stave off many age-related issues and ensures your dog stays lively and curious.

If you’re wondering where to start, here’s a simple routine for a young, healthy dog:

  1. Daily Strolls: Aim for a 1.5km - 2km walk every day. Walking on uneven ground is ideal to protect their joints and muscles, so try to mix up the terrain.

  2. Games: Spend at least half an hour every evening playing with your dog. Games like fetch or tug-of-war are great, and the goal is to keep going until they’ve had enough.

  3. Weekly Sprints: Once a week, give your dog a more intense workout, like running or another high-energy activity. This should be enough to get their heart pumping without completely tiring them out.

These activities will help your dog stay healthy, happy, and engaged. By committing to these habits, you’re giving your dog the best chance at a long and healthy life.
